Coquitlam Foundation donates $36,000 to new City Centre library

COQUITLAM – When the new City Centre Library opens in November, its many features will include a spacious multi-purpose room named in honour of the Coquitlam Foundation.

Establishment of the Coquitlam Foundation Room follows the foundation’s decision to make an extraordinary grant of $36,000 to the library from the foundation’s Builders Trust Fund.

Julie Fisher, chair of the Coquitlam Foundation’s board of directors, explains that, under the terms of the sponsorship deal reached with the City of Coquitlam (which owns the library), about $25,000 of the donation will go towards outfitting the room with equipment, including an LCD projector, an interactive whiteboard and a portable speaker system. The remaining funds will help offset construction costs.

“We are extremely pleased to be the first of what we hope will be many sponsors helping the library becoming a truly cutting-edge facility,” Fisher says. “We want to thank both the City of Coquitlam, for facilitating this grant, and the library board, for having the vision to approach us with the sponsorship concept in the first place.”

Jack Trumley, chair of the Coquitlam Public Library Board, says the foundation’s grant will help focus the public’s attention on the exciting new library branch that is opening in the heart of City Centre. The new branch replaces one currently located on the ground floor of City Hall.

“With the Coquitlam Foundation now showing the way, we hope other institutions and corporations will follow its example and support the library at this important time, too,” Trumley says. “An investment in a library is an investment in a community’s future.”

The foundation also distributed more than $56,000 in grants, scholarships and bursaries at its Awards Night last May. The foundation manages $2.2 million in foundation-directed and donor-advised funds. The foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary at a gala event at the Red Robinson Theatre on November 15.
