The Coquitlam Foundation is a community foundation established by an Act of the British Columbia Legislature-the Coquitlam Foundation Act -in June 1992. The Foundation manages and administers the monies it receives and uses the donations entrusted to it for charitable purposes primarily to benefit the inhabitants of the City of Coquitlam.

How does the Coquitlam Foundation operate?
A 12-member board of directors manages the Foundation. The Board includes three statutory representatives-the Mayor of Coquitlam, a member of the Board of School Trustees of School District #43 (Coquitlam), and Director of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce. Committed volunteers reflecting a cross-section of the community and its interests make up the remaining nine positions on the Board. The existing Board appoints new directors to replace outgoing directors. Appointments are for 4 years and no director may serve more than two consecutive 4 year terms. The Board also appoints sub committees from the public at large to assist the Board in carrying out its charitable purposes. The sub committees make recommendations to the Board and the Board then decides whether to act on the recommendations.

Where does the Coquitlam Foundation receive its money from?
The Coquitlam Foundation receives funds from a variety of sources- corporate and individual donors, community organizations with which it partners, and other community Foundations, such as the Vancouver Foundation. In addition it holds an annual fund raising event every Spring–the Spring Gala. It also receives interest income on the capital it invests.

Can the Foundation issue me a tax receipt for a donations I might make?
Yes. The Coquitlam Foundation has tax exempt status as a registered charity under paragraph 149(1)(f) of the Income Tax Act.

Who is eligible for a grant from the Coquitlam Foundation?
The Board has a Discretionary Grants Policy. Eligible applicants include individuals and charitable organizations within School District #43 boundaries, subject to the requirement that the grants be made primarily for the benefit of Coquitlam citizens. The charitable organizations must be registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and the commitment of the organization must be to the citizens of the City of Coquitlam. The Foundation limits the frequency of grants it awards to an individual or charitable organization to a period of two consecutive years. After the second consecutive year, the grant recipient must wait one year before applying to the Foundation for a further grant.

What does the Coquitlam Foundation provide funding for?
The Coquitlam Foundation supports a number of areas of interest. These areas include children, youth and seniors, health delivery and support, community services, public safety, people at risk, education, heritage, the environment and arts and culture. The Foundation has both general and special funds which it accesses to meet approved funding requests. Click here to see a list of some of the projects that the Foundation has funded since 1992.

What must I do to make a grant application?
You must complete a grant application. The Foundation publishes advertisements requesting grant applications in local newspapers during January each year. The newspaper advertisements provide information on where grant forms may be picked up or accessed. Generally, forms are available at Coquitlam City Hall or on line.

Are there deadlines for application?
Yes. The closing date for applications is usually late February of the year for which the grant is sought.

Are there any other requirements once funds are granted by the Foundation?
Yes. First, the recipient must only use the funds for the purpose for which it has been granted. And, second, the recipient must provide a report to the Foundation within one year after receiving the grant outlining the use made of the funds.
