Dr. Jane Jae-Kyung Shin Family Fund

Bursary Fund

This fund carries Dr. Jane Jae-Kyung Shin’s name, but it is built on the untold labor of others. It reflects the sacrifices of Jane’s parents, who left behind everything familiar to start over in a new country so their children could have choices they never had. It honors the teachers, mentors, and communities that provided support before self-sufficiency was possible. None of it was owed, but all of it made a difference.

This story is not unique—immigrants have long carved out places in Canada with little more than grit and faith. They have navigated multiple identities, responsibilities, and expectations, striving to make the most of opportunities that often came at a cost. Education has always been the throughline, not just as a measure of achievement but as a means of securing agency and mobility over one’s own future.

This fund is established in that spirit—that someone else, in a moment of uncertainty, will have a path forward.

Dr. Jane Jae-Kyung Shin Family Fund is about ensuring that opportunity isn’t left to luck, circumstance, or generational wealth and privilege. It is about recognizing that talent and dream exist everywhere, but access does not. This fund is about the small, ordinary acts of support that can change the course of one’s life. Because those of us who have had a door opened for us—no matter how slightly—have a responsibility to leave it open for the next person.
