Coquitlam non-profits and students can now apply for Foundation $

COQUITLAM — When the Coquitlam Foundation presented a cheque to Coquitlam Search and Rescue at last spring’s annual Awards Night, it was just one of dozens of such donations and disbursements, totaling $160,000, made to local non-profits and students.

But, as numerous as they may have been, each of the grants, bursaries and scholarships awarded last year has made a significant and positive impact on the community. The award to Coquitlam SAR was no exception.

Indeed, as the foundation now begins accepting applications for a new round of awards, Coquitlam SAR has confirmed that the $3,500 it received last year constituted a vital part of the organization’s fundraising campaign to put a new mobile command centre (MCC) on the road.

“The foundation’s generous contribution is assisting us in outfitting the MCC with the latest digital very high frequency [VHF] radios, helping to ensure the safety of our field teams,” says search manager Ian MacDonald. “On behalf of Coquitlam Search and Rescue, we thank the foundation for its ongoing support.”

Foundation chair Janet Toddington says she is pleased to learn the foundation played a role in the project’s success. “It is extremely gratifying to know that our support not only helped Coquitlam SAR reach its fundraising goal but also, more importantly, will allow Coquitlam SAR to better serve the community,” she says.

The new mobile command centre is expected to be in service by April 30, 2016.

Meantime, preparations are now underway to begin processing another intake of applications for grants, bursaries and scholarships. Details on how to apply can be found in the Grants & Bursaries section of the foundation’s website. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 4 p.m. Successful applicants will be notified in May.

Grants, bursaries and scholarships will be awarded at the annual Awards Night, taking place this year on June 9 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre, 1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam.

The foundation manages $2.8 million in 27 foundation-directed and donor-advised funds. The foundation always welcomes donations to its funds. To learn more about the Coquitlam Foundation, including how to get involved, please visit www.coquitlamfoundation.com.
