MORE INFO ON THIS FUND

Leo Chan, a Pinetree Secondary School Graduate and second-year University of Victoria Political Science student, was a talented, humble, vibrant and healthy young man whose life was cut short in 2012 by the Meningitis y strain.  He was and still is the only child of Mabel and CK Chan.

Leo lived a remarkable life from his birth in Toronto in 1992 to his untimely passing in 2012 at the age of 19 in Victoria. A passionate advocate for positive change, Leo’s impact was felt by all who knew him.

Leo’s achievements were diverse and impressive. An exceptional student, he excelled academically, earning scholarships, and participating in prestigious programs like Encounters with Canada. Leo’s love for music, leadership in the BC Youth Parliament, and dedication to volunteer work showcased his multifaceted talents. His life was cut short by bacterial meningitis, a tragedy that highlighted the importance of awareness and preventive measures.

Leo’s legacy is about LOVE, unconditional love!  It is much more than raising awareness about the protection of young people from suffering and dying of a preventable disease like meningitis.  Leo would want to challenge us to reflect on our purpose, urging us to embrace our significance, spread love, and be the best versions of ourselves. His teachings resonate in the virtues he embodied—love, compassion, wisdom, joy, strength, courage, humility, and gratitude. Even in the face of adversity, Leo’s resilience and unique path serve as a testament to the transformative power of living authentically.

Knowing how much Leo believed in higher education and his love of fellow young people, his family wanted to honour their beloved son by establishing the Leo Memorial Scholarship in his hometown of Coquitlam.
The recipient would be someone applying for a post-secondary education who has an exemplary record of volunteer service in their school and community.  The applicant must show they have an intention to offer their knowledge and skills for service to the community – someone who is service-oriented.
